Tying the Knot?!

Have you thought about how marriage will affect your insurance plan?

Getting married is such a fun and exciting, yet stressful, event. It takes a lot of preparation to make your big day perfect. In the mix of all the planning often times important financials can be forgotten, insurance being one of them.

If a wedding is in your near future, the following insurance changes may be something to add to your ongoing to-do list:

Auto Insurance – After marriage most companies award you with married discount rates. And, if you both own a vehicle, putting them on the same insurance policy will most likely allow for a multi-car discount. We suggest getting quotes from both you and your spouse’s current policies to compare the terms and coverages, seeing which option will benefit you most.

Home Insurance – Combining two homes into one can really increase the number of possessions that are housed under one roof. Whether you own a home or rent, we suggest re-evaluating your home inventory to be sure your personal property limits are sufficient. If your spouse is bringing a lot of valuable items into the marriage (jewelry, collectibles, guns, etc.) you may want to consider scheduling certain items separately.

Umbrella Insurance – Be sure to add your new spouse as a named insured on your umbrella policy so the additional liability coverage extends to him/her.

Life Insurance – Likely this is the last thing you want to think about, however life insurance is very important when your lifestyle depends on both you and your spouse’s income. If something were to happen to one of you, you’ll want to make sure the surviving spouse is taken care of financially.

Contact your nearest GTA Agent if any of these changes may apply to you. We’ll be happy to assist in combining your insurance plans, helping to make the transition flow smoothly.
